Today when I was taking the tube to work I overheard the song playing from iphone of a guy standing next to me (as you can imagine how packed the tube usually is), and seems like it was Moderat. It became so powerful in the film <Laurence Anyways>, and the use of music has a tremendous impact of building up the power of the film.
Let me recall the time when I watched it, it was in the private view at ICA in London. What was interesting and that I couldn’t forget is when Laurence first popped up with feminine costumes, a couple, a lady and a guy, suddenly stood up and left the cinema.
The rest of the audience sat through the whole movie, perhaps some took it as a challenge of their acceptance to that flavour of sexuality, or the uncanny even (“Can’t leave the seat until really not able to stand it you know!”). But I won’t make a deal about such behaviour, it is equally empathic and understandable since I would feel offended if people say to me “one day when you get a boyfriend and sleep with him”, strangely. If only the heterosexual couple stayed a little bit longer they would find out the transgender part was more like a gimmick, as the main narrative actually lies on Fred’s role, her contradictions of body and mind; the definition of relationships in social context, complexity in sexuality, the ultimate love and rationality etc. The film doesn’t strike me too much on these aspects as I have already put myself in the pool of these issues for a long term; I love how I resonate with the part where trans woman doesn’t mean she must be in love with men. And usually how easy and thoughtless with people’s associating and stereotyping act causes one to antagonise with labelling.
Having recognised my affection towards girls since eleven, I still can’t relate myself to any categories: neither lesbian nor bisexual would I fit in. It is not the gender part that determines my love towards another I reckon, it is never the sex of the person that attracts me. Yet I’m only halfway true to be pansexual too. Having sex in a relationship does not play the most important role, but interestingly when that occurs my preference would be women. I believe the argument of separation in gender and orientation exists, which fully explains Laurence’s case; how many in the world can keep this thinking simple and not to confuse about it.
The music video is full of wonder, aesthetically sensitive. Human beings, wonderful creatures. Why would people, especially the ones who have religious beliefs, suspect God’s power to create our diversity, narrow down the possibilities of what we are, and hence deny the intention of God’s creation?
